Choosing a Piano for Home Practice

Friday, March 11, 2022 by Rocio Friesen | Uncategorized

What does my child need for piano practice at home? This is a question every parent asks when starting with piano lessons and I want to help you walk through it. Before we dive in I want to clarify I am not receiving any kind commissions or benefit from any of the links in this blog post.

Ok let's get started. There are 4 things to consider when purchasing an acoustic piano or digital piano for at home practice :

1. The Piano.

The piano is an investment that will reflect in the development of good technique in the student. There are several options to consider here. I want to leave you with this link to a YouTube video that explains very clearly what the best options are and which ones to avoid. Best Instrument for Piano Students

2. The Piano Stand.

This is very important when choosing to go with a digital Piano and or a keyboard. The best option is a stand that can be set up to the standard height of and acoustic Piano or Grand Piano, which is 28 to 29 inches measuring from the floor to the top surface of the white keys. The X Stands are not good for playing when seated. I highly discourage them. There is no room for the legs and leads to incorrect sitting and back pain. Those X stands are made for standing. Digital pianos like a Yamaha P515 have stands designed to screw the piano down and have it at the standard height. Another option is a 4 leg collapsible keyboard stand. Here is an example in this link

3. The Bench.

They come at the standard height which is about 18.5 inches. This is good for most teenagers and adults. But for growing children the height will need adjustment so the arms are parallel to the floor. Sitting too low or too high leads to improper hand position that can affect ligaments. The height could be fixed by adding some thick books or foam pads or investing in an adjustable bench. You can find adjustable benches on Amazon. They also  can be ordered from music stores in the city. This bench is the best option I have found so far and is made in Canada.

4. Support for the feet.
When sitting at the piano the whole feet must be well planted on the floor in order to play well. Children should not have their feet hanging or reaching only with their toes to the ground. This can be easily fixed with a box, a step, small stool or some books. There are also foot stools in the market that can be adjusted as the children grows. Here is an option in this link
.

Hope this helps you make a well informed decision in this area.
